Establish the Mission: How Leading with Purpose Helps Us All to Thrive
Tim Mulhere, executive vice president of special initiatives, Institutional reflects on the power of purpose and how it’s influenced our support of the military community.
“A desire to serve and to be part of something with purpose – something bigger than myself.” That was my son’s answer when asked why he chose to attend the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. He made a decision of integrity and intention. A decision to serve. As I prepare to retire and reflect on my career at Ecolab, my son’s words resonate in a special way. Being a part of something with purpose is what brought me here 22 years ago and what has kept me growing and committed to our mission ever since.
One of the greatest sources of pride during my tenure has been serving as executive sponsor of our Military Employee Resource Group (MERGE). In being trusted with this privilege, I’ve had the honor to meet with, hear from and work with so many dedicated MERGE members that share a passion for Ecolab’s commitment to protect what’s vital and to create real impact in the world. Dedicated members that have played an integral role in fostering a military-friendly sense of belonging and appreciation within our organization and communities. They have selflessly given their time to organizing community giving campaigns and volunteer events to support veterans and active service members and their families in addition to spearheading a partnership with our Talent Acquisition team to develop a recruiting and hiring guide specifically tailored to veterans and those actively serving.
Over the years, I’ve witnessed Ecolab’s evolving efforts to build diverse and inclusive teams that have included recognizing and honoring our country’s Service members. One of our most significant moments of recognition earlier this year was the distinct honor of being identified as a VETS Indexes 3 Star Employer, as part of the 2022 VETS Indexes Employer Awards. This very special milestone recognizes an organization’s commitment to recruiting, hiring, retaining, developing, and supporting veterans and the military-connected community. Nearly 120 organizations applied to be considered, but awards were reserved for employers with truly exceptional veteran-related efforts and programs.
As a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon and Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award recipient, this latest recognition for Ecolab underscores our dedication to provide the right resources and support for our military community.
Though my time at Ecolab is nearing its end, I leave filled with such pride in what I have been able to be a part of. Thank you to MERGE and all of our active Service members, veterans and military family members. Thank you for your service. I am confident that your mission will continue to serve and inspire. Because it’s when we seek to connect to a purpose – to be a part of something bigger than ourselves – that real and meaningful impact happens.
